Fans of the Ice Climbers are surely disappointed at the conspicuous absence of the eggplant-loving Eskimos from Super Smash Bros. Wii U and 3DS. Sadly, Popo and Nana are not playable characters in the multiplayer fighting game, and you're probably wondering why. The reason won’t make anyone feel better about their omission: According to Smash Bros. director Masahiro Sakurai, the Ice Climbers video game franchise isn't popular enough to warrant prioritizing the wintery duo for the game. Speaking to Japan's Famitsu magazine, he explained that though the Ice Climbers were up and running characters in the Wii U version, getting their gameplay style to work properly on the 3DS proved too challenging. Debugging is a massive undertaking, Sakurai said, and the extra time was needed to allow him and his team to iron out the kinks from the more complex Wii U version. With the franchise unlikely to receive a new game from Nintendo any time soon, the decision to leave the Ice Climbers out in the cold isn't too surprising, though it is a shame. All hope is not lost, however, as they could be added as DLC later on when the issues pertaining to the 3DS version are addressed.
