Most Video Game Developers Want to Work at Valve, Study Finds

valve logo If Valve was an animal, it would be a cat, because god knows the Internet loves it to death. As it turns out, so do most other video game developers, with a new survey revealing that a great deal of them would rather work for the Half-Life and Portal creator than even their own companies. Conducted by the Independent Game Developers Association, the survey asked more than 2,200 developers about their game publishers and developers of choice. Surprisingly, Valve managed to rank higher than "my own company" and "current employer". One would think that independent devs would prefer to work for themselves rather than answer to someone else, but that's apparently not the case for everyone, and for good reason. The top 10 most sought after companies are as follows. Let us know if any of the results surprise you:
  1. Valve
  2. My own company
  3. Activision Blizzard
  4. BioWare
  5. Ubisoft
  6. Current employer
  7. Nintendo
  8. Naughty Dog
  9. Double Fine
  10. Bethesda Game Studios
So why is it that everyone want to work for Valve? It must have something to do with its extremely flat organizational structure. You see, unlike most companies, Valve isn't too big on having bosses and managers breathing down your neck. Instead, employees have a lot of freedom to work on whatever projects they want with little interference from higher-ups. Isn't that just awesome? Now that you know which companies most developers would want to work for, what is your dream company?
