As a first for the Mario Kart series, Mario Kart 8 is getting two DLC packs, each including new characters, skins, and courses. These are things that have never been added to a Mario Kart game post-release. The first pack unlocks The Legend of Zelda's main man Link as a playable character, a cat-suit skin for Peach, and a tanooki skin for Mario. Similarly, the second pack introduces Animal Crossing’s Villager, Isabelle from the 3DS's Animal Crossing: New Leaf, and Dry Bowser from Super Mario 3D Land to the popular racing game. Make sure to read our Mario Kart 8 review. In Nintendo’s own words:
Each Add On Content pack will contain two new cups, each with four courses, which, in total, increases the number of available courses by 50 percent. The Add On Content packs include classics like Wario’s Gold Mine from Mario Kart Wii, as well as new courses, some taking place in the worlds of The Legend of Zelda and Animal Crossing. New vehicles will also arrive with each pack, including the Blue Falcon kart representing the F-Zero franchise in the first AOC pack. Also part of the DLC packs are eight new colors for both Yoshi and Shyguy, which are available immediately if you pre-order. The first pack releases in November 2014, while the second arrives in May of 2015.
