Nintendo wants to get back into the movie business and hopes to release a new film within the next three years. Did you ask for this?
In an interview with Japanese news outlet Asahi Shimbun, which was translated
by Nintendo Life, Nintendo president Tatsumi Kimishima said the company was investigating movie production.
There is no immediate plan for one, but a film is defiantly something Kimishima wants to fast track and hints would be produced in-house. If he gets his way, it could be ready within two to three years.
The Big N has experimented with cinema before with several Pikmin short movies, and it’s not unheard of for video game publishers to attempt the jump from gaming to movies. Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within, for example, didn’t quite sit well with critics and Ubisoft is praying that its Assassin’s Creed movie doesn’t befall the same fate.
There is even a Mega Man movie
on the way...
We can’t talk about Nintendo and movies in without mentioning the infamous Super Mario Bros. movie, which was so bad that it probably scared off others from licensing Mario for decades. Several Nintendo characters did appear in Wreck-It Ralph, which was relatively well-received, but also in Pixels, which wasn’t.
Video games and movies have traditionally gone together like oil and water, so here’s hoping that something bucks he trend very soon.
