Unlike the PlayStation 4, the Xbox One has backwards compatibility, a feature that might be boosting its sales. While Microsoft’s console continues to lag the PS4 on the sales chart by a large margin, it has been selling well, and Xbox head Phil Spencer believes that backwards compatibility is helping.
Spencer says the 51 percent increase in June 2015 from the same period last year was largely a result of the announcement of backwards compatibility, stating on twitter
“June was a good month and I think BC matters. Lot’s of 360 owners deciding when to make the jump, big focus for us.”

This not too surprising, considering that there are still many gamers who haven’t made the transition from last-gen gaming. However, with next-gen exclusives like Batman: Arkham Knight out now and many AAA franchises like Assassin’s Creed abandoning last-gen entirely, all eyes are on the Xbox One and PS4.
Backwards compatibility is a big advantage for the Xbox One, making the system more compelling for those who don’t want to leave last-gen behind entirely.
Sony insists backwards compatibility has little value for gamers, hence why the PS4 will likely never get the feature
. What a shame...
Do you think backwards compatibility is good for the video game industry, and does it make you want the Xbox One more than the PS4?
