There’s a Portal Movie in Development

Portal, one of the most-acclaimed video game series of all time, is getting a movie.

After confirming several months back that both a Portal movie and a Half-Life movie were in development, JJ Abrams — best known for directing the new Star Wars and Star Trek movies — has now revealed to IGN that it’s all hands on deck for everyone involved:

“We have a meeting coming up next week with Valve, we’re very active. I’m hoping that there will be a Portal announcement fairly soon.

“We are having some really interesting discussions with writers. Once you said you’re doing a movie or show about a specific thing that is a known quantity you start to find people who are rabid about these things. As someone who loves playing Half Life and Portal … it’s incredible when you talk to someone who just ‘gets’ it, it’s like, oh my god, it’s really the seed for this incredible tree you’re growing.”

Movies based on videos games have traditionally sucked hard, so here’s hoping the Portal movie turns out to be fantastic. It seems everything JJ Abrams touches ends up being at least decent, so there is a good chance it will buck the trend.

How do you envision a Portal movie? Who would you cast?
