A recent purchasing intent survey by Gamestop hints that the Nintendo NX console will be released within the next 12 months.

The survey asked users what they plan on buying within the next 12 months, with their choices including the Nintendo NX, HTC Vive, PlayStation VR, Oculus Rift and the Samsung Gear VR. Does GameStop know something we don’t? Possibly.

We know for a fact that a plethora of VR headsets are set to release in 2016, but Nintendo remains mum on the release date of the Wii U successor. It will, however, make the big reveal sometime during the year.

Rumors have it that the Nintendo NX handheld device will launch in late 2016, while the actual home console could arrive in 2017. With both the Wii U and 3DS devices considered outdated tech, the new hardware should fall more in line with the needs of modern gamers.

As much as we hope the NX console releases within the next 12 months, preferably sometime in 2016, Nintendo could always change its mind.

There is a lot to look forward to in Mortal Kombat 11.

As the creator of two Injustice games and the mastermind behind the most popular fighting game series of all time — Mortal Kombat! — NetherRealm Studios has built a solid reputation for developing compelling fighting games and continues to deliver quality time and time again.

The Mortal Kombat fighting games have been captivating worldwide audiences with immeasurable violence, blood, gore, incredible narrative, and of course, unprecedented gameplay ever since the franchise’s birth in arcades back in 1992. Mortal Kombat 11 marks a new chapter for the fan-beloved franchise, and there is certainly good reason to be excited about it.

The Story

Mortal Kombat 11 story revolves around a new antagonist named Kronika, who has the ability to manipulate time. In Mortal Kombat 11 players will be able to fight as past and present versions of Mortal Kombat characters, which should make up an interesting narrative.

The Official Story Prologue trailer gave players a glimpse at the direction designers took in MK11. In it, we see Raiden torturing Shinnok, something that’s very out-of-character for our beloved God of Thunder. Brace yourself for some serious conflict in Mortal Kombat 11.

MK11 Character Roster

The will be over 25 playable fighters in Mortal Kombat 11, including DLC characters

The Characters

As with any new Mortal Kombat game, there are many characters to choose from, including plenty of familiar faces and some newcomers. Mortal Kombat should feature at least 25 unique characters in game’s roster on launch, with additional characters coming as DLC content.

In addition to being the first to experience debutants such as Geras or Kronika, you will get to explore the the changes NetherRealm Studio made to Scorpion, Sub-Zero, Johnny Cage, Baraka,  Kano, Liu Kang, Kung Lao, Raiden, and many other old-school characters.

Those who pre-ordered receive Shao Kahn as a playable character, while those who purchased the premium edition of Mortal Kombat 11 get the base game, plus a Kombat Pack that grants them six new DLC playable characters released over time and early access to DLC characters.

One of those DLC characters is Shang Tsung, who is voiced by Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa, the actor who played the iconic character in the 1995 Mortal Kombat movie.

The year 2018 came to  a close on a decent note, but Nintendo stood out as the clear overall winner.

According to market research company NPD, consumers spent $3.4 billion on games, hardware, accessories, and game cards in December 2018. Although that represented a decline in software and hardware spending, continued strong sales of game cards and accessories helped lift the overall industry by 2%.

2018 overall was a banner year for video games. Sales amounted to $16.7 billion, an increase of 13% compared 2017 and the highest ever since 2011’s $17.4 billion.

Hardware

The Nintendo Switch was the winner in December, having generated the highest dollar sales during the month. In fact, the console’s revenues  was the highest for any single platform since the Wii back in December 2009. In unit sales, December 2018 was its highest December haul since 2010.

Thanks to the strong December, the Nintendo Switch was the best-selling console in all of 2018, both in unit and dollar sales. It recorded the highest total since the PS4 in 2015.

It was a great year for video game hardware in general. Sales increased by 8% to $5.1 billion and all consoles contributed, including the mini consoles from Nintendo and Sony.

Combining all platforms, hardware and unit sales were the highest since 2009.

Software

Video game software generated $7.1 billion in 2018 across all systems, a 7% year-over-year increase. The NPD notes that this is the highest annual haul since the $7.5 billion generated in 2012.

The best-selling game was Red Dead Redemption 2, with Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 and  NBA 2K19 following behind at number two and three, respectively.

It was Nintendo, however, that generated the most money from software sales, something it hadn’t done since 2009. As the best-selling game during December and the fifth overall in 2018, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate played a big part in that success.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate was so successful, in fact, that it set a new release month dollar sales record for an exclusive game, a title previously held by 2010’s Halo: Reach.

Mario Kart 8 also sold well for Nintendo, becoming the second best-selling racing game ever, just behind Mario Kart Wii.

The critically-acclaimed Spider-Man ended the year at number six, the highest ranking for a superhero game since Spider-Man: The Movie 2 took the fifth spot in 2004.

Top 10 best-selling games across all platforms in 2018:

  1. Red Dead Redemption
  2. Call of Duty: Black Ops 4
  3. NBA 2K19
  4. Madden NFL 19
  5. Super Smash Bros. Ultimate
  6. Spider-Man
  7. Far Cry 5
  8. God of War
  9. Monster Hunter: World
  10. Assassin’s Creed: Odyssey
