Xbox One S Actually More Powerful Than Regular Xbox One

Published

on

Xbox One S and original

When Microsoft revealed the slim Xbox One S at E3 2016, we were led to believe its only noteworthy selling points were its significantly smaller size and more appealing design. However, as it turns out, it is also more powerful than the regular Xbox One.

Yes, the console also supports 4K media playback and boasts a UHD Blu-ray player, but we are little astonished to find out it actually plays regular Xbox One games better.

In an interview with Polygon, Rod Fergusson, head of Gears of War 4 developer The Coalition, said the new Gears benefits from some of the Xbox One S’ increased power.

Apparently, the updated console features increased GPU and CPU “raw” power that allows games to dynamically scale resolution in both single-player and multiplayer and maintain frame-rate targets for each.

The team behind Gears of War 4 was able to use the extra power to reduce the frequency of frame-rate and resolution penalties in demanding spots.

The Xbox One S’ high dynamic range (HDR) offers a wider colour range, helping with some visuals improvements like surface detail on metal and armour.

It’s odd that Microsoft didn’t say anything about the One S having more power than the regular Xbox One, even if it isn’t a huge increase. Maybe they didn’t want to shift any focus away from the beast that is the Xbox One Scorpio…

Are you more likely to buy an Xbox One S now?
