Microsoft Buys Minecraft Developer Mojang for $2.5 Billion

Microsoft has officially bought Minecraft developer Mojang for approximately $2.5 billion. Notch is a billionaire!

With humble beginnings as a small and simple PC game in 2009, Minecraft has grown to become a cultural phenomenon, outselling virtually every other video game in history. The announcement was made by Xbox chief Phil Spencer, who promised that although Mojang will now be a first-party studio, Microsoft will continue to support the lucrative title across other platforms, namely iOS, Android and PlayStation:

“Our relationship with Mojang began when we initially talked to the team about bringing Minecraft to the console. Minecraft quickly became the top online game on Xbox Live, with over two billion hours played on Xbox 360 in the last two years. That working relationship set the ground work for other opportunities. We’ve long seen the incredible potential of Minecraft.”

Mojang founder and Minecraft‘s mastermind Markus “Notch” Persson will leave the company once the deal is finalized, with other members of his creative team in tow. However, lead developer Jens Bergensten will remain behind to oversee the IP under Microsoft’s ownership.

RELATED STORY: Amazon, not Google, buys Twitch for over $1 billion!

It was apparently never Persson’s intention for Minecraft to become the monumental success it is today, never wanting the responsibility of operating something of such global significance. He made attempts to work on smaller projects over the years, but the pressure of owning Minecraft became too much for him to handle. Selling the company was just a matter of preserving his sanity:

“It’s not about the money. It’s about my sanity. I don’t see myself as a real game developer. I make games because it’s fun, and because I love games and I love to program, but I don’t make games with the intention of them becoming huge hits, and I don’t try to change the world.”

Microsoft’s plan to continue supporting Minecraft on multiple platforms will no doubt make fans of the franchise happy, but a direct sequel to the game could very well be released exclusively on the Xbox and PC.

It’s true — the new Xbox releases in 2020 with Halo and is leaps and bounds more powerful than the Xbox One.

At E3 2019, Microsoft confirmed that the new Xbox — codenamed “Project Scarlett” — sources its computing power from an Advanced Micro Devices chip that makes it four times more powerful than the Xbox One X.

It is able to show up to 120 frames per second (twice the speed of the average TV) and features a solid-state drive that allows games to load much faster than on older mechanical hard drives.

The new Xbox will be released during the 2020 holiday season, with Halo: Infinite as a launch title.

It is shaping up to give the PlayStation 5 a serious run for it’s money. Are you excited? What do you hope for?
