Microsoft Is Buying Fallout: New Vegas Developer Obsidian Entertainment

Fallout New Vegas

The tech giant is just about ready to own the highly-acclaimed game studio.

Microsoft is preparing to buy Obsidian Entertainment, according to a new report.

Sources close to the matter revealed to Kotaku that the deal, which has been the work for a while, is “90%” finished, and it’s only a matter of time before everything is finalized.

Founded in 2003, Obsidian Entertainment is best know for its numerous RPG titles, which in addition to Fallout: New Vegas, include Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic II, Neverwinter Nights 2, Alpha Protocol, and Pillars of Eternity.

Many of their games are sequels based on licensed properties.

Obsidian is just one of slew of notable video game-related purchases by Microsoft in 2018. Earlier in June, it announced the acquisition of Hellblade studio Ninja Theory, State of Decay 2 developers Undead Labs, and Compulsion Games, the studio behind We Happy Few.

The company may have dropped the ball against Sony’s PlayStation 4 this gaming generation, but it appears to be setting itself up for a resurgence for the next generation.

Get Hyped With The Assassin’s Creed Odyssey Launch Trailer

Published

Assassin’s Creed Odyssey, River Kill

This is an Assassin’s Creed game unlike any other.

Set in ancient Greece, Assassin’s Creed Odyssey builds on what made origins so good, bringing back some of the beloved features the franchise is known for while introducing radical new changes and departures — most notably, an RPG-driven dialogue wheel, the ability to play either as a male or a female protagonist, and the ability to choose between romance options — that could potentially change the face of the series forever.

Unlike the previous Assassin’s Creed games, this launch trailer uses gameplay footage rather than CGI, but it still manages to be engaging. It showcases some of the gameplay elements players can expect, as well as the locations they will frequent. We also get a bit on the story and how the choice you make will affect it.

Assassin’s Creed Odyssey is playable on the PS4, Xbox One and PC. Watch the trailer here, and let us know if it gets you hyped…

Red Dead Redemption 2 Has 200 Different Animal Species With Unique Behaviors

Published

Red Dead Redemption 2 Vultures

Hunting was an important part of life in the untamed American frontier, so animal lovers are in for treat.

Red Dead Redemption 2 has a diverse range of wildlife to kill, skin, eat and sell, with Rockstar revealing via Twitter that players can expect around 200 species of animals, birds, and fish in the game.

Better yet, the animals have their own unique behavior and interact with each other in different and expected ways. Predators will hunt for herbivores, some animals are solitary, some hunt are pack hunters, some can only be seen at night, etc.

Preparing animals for consumption or other uses require some work. For instance, larger animals must be cut up into smaller pieces and, once prepared, physically taken either to your camp to be eaten or to a shop to sell. If neither is done, the meat will spoil.

Moreover, leaving blood on your horse could attract unwanted attention from predators.

Red Dead Redemption 2 is playable on the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.

Say It Ain’t So, Devil May Cry 5 Has Microtransactions

Published

Devil May Cry 5 Deluxe Edition Art

The good news is that you won’t be forced to pay for anything.

For all the praise the Devil May Cry 5 TGS 2018 demo received, one new addition in particular caused a stir, and it has nothing to do with Dante’s theme song being removed because of the sexual misconduct allegation against the singer. No, the issue is much bigger.

Those who played the demo made an unfortunate discovery — Devil May Cry 5 has microtransactions. You will be able to spend real money on red orbs, which are essentially the game’s main form of currency.

In Devil May Cry 5, which are obtained by doing virtually anything from combat to breaking red clusters, can be used to upgrade your character by purchasing new skills and revive on the spot rather than being forced to do so at the last checkpoint).

You can also exchange real money for red orbs, a system that isn’t particularly new to the Devil May Cry Series and actually existed in Devil May Cry 4 Special Edition.

Fortunately, whereas some games require you to spend real money gain certain features, spending money on red orbs in Devil May Cry 5 is optional. According to Capcom, the game doles out “ample” red orbs in regular play.

“… players can purchase even more red orbs which can be used for quicker upgrades or more continues,” the publisher said. “This is completely optional as the game has been balanced to provide ample orbs for play without purchase in mind. This allows players more options to use red orbs at the pace and style they prefer to play.”

Let’s just hope for Capcom’s sake that Devil May Cry 5 doesn’t join the growing list of games ruined by microtransactions.

Are you OK with how microtransactions are applied in Dante and friends’ latest adventure? Share your thoughts in the comments below.
