For those not thrilled with the PS4 Pro’s specs and functionality, the console only has one saving grace: its $399 price point. In fact, so impressive that price that one analyst believes it puts Sony’s “4K” system at an advantage over both the Xbox One S and upcoming Scorpio.
In an interview with GamigBolt, well known Wedbush Securities analyst Michael Pachter noted that the PS4 Pro’s cheaper price and earlier launch might be enough to help it remain competitive against or even beat the Scorpio. He specifically stated:
“I think that the $399 price point is a pretty big move by Sony, particularly with a launch this fall. It’s hard to justify buying a $299 Xbox One S when you get twice the HDD and future proof for 4K by buying the PS4 Pro. I really think this puts Microsoft in a hole with Scorpio, as they will arrive a year late, and will have to charge competitively even to remain in the picture. Ideally, Microsoft can launch Scorpio for $299, but I don’t expect that to happen. If PS4 Pro is $349 by next holiday, Microsoft is really in a tough spot.”
Despite what you might think about our article “Top 5 Things Wrong With The PS4 Pro“, we actually think Pachter has a point. The Scorpio, which will undoubtedly be the more powerful console, but its superior capabilities will surely command a price premium over any console on the market. And then factor in Sony’s one year lead, which not only gives it time to get its message across to millions of gamers but also some wiggle room to lower the Pro’s already low price if needed …
The chess game between Microsoft and Sony is only going to get more interesting from here on out. Do you agree that the Scorpio is in trouble? If so, what can Microsoft do to get the upper hand? Make sure to share your thoughts in the comments section.
